Whr – Waste Heat Recovery In HeavyIndustry

WHR is an acronym obtained from the words Waste Heat Recovery. Particularly in cement process, but also in iron-steel and glass processes, which have thermal energy, it is the technology benefited for electrical energy generation. WHR systems which were popular in Japan in the 1970s have become popular in China since the late 1990s, thanks to government incentives and sanctions. Today, these systems continue to spread from China to the world. The most important feature of WHR systems is that the energy produced is economic and environmentally friendly. Due to increases in energy prices and in awareness of energy efficiency, the installation of WHR systems in industry continues to rise day by day.

The main equipments in WHR boiler systems are turbine, generator, dedusting chamber, cooling tower and chemical treatment unit. Boilers used in these systems are usually tailor-design, high-tech and single-stage, double-stage or flasher type boilers. In general for WHR systems, conventional steam technology is applied to high-temperature waste gases and Organic Rankine conversion technology is applied to low-temperature waste gases. In conventional steam technology systems, waste gas with a high calorific value is used in the boiler to produce steam to be used in the turbine. Then, by sending the steam to turbine, electrical energy is obtained with the help of generator. Water exiting from the turbine is cooled down and sent to the chemical treatment unit for reuse.

atik isiWHR systems are widespread especially in the cement industry. In cement plants using the gases thrown into the atmosphere gases after pre-heating, with 280-350°C temperature, and the exit gases taken directly from the cooling with 250-300°C temperature, it is possible to generate electricity. By a clinker production line with production capacity of 3200 tons/day in average, depending on the technology and the humidity of raw materials used, electrical energy between 3.0 and 6.0 MW can be obtained. Since such a facility has operating cost of approximately 2 cents/ kWh, same performance of saving can be obtained like a hydroelectric power plant running in this facility.

WHR has many advantages such as free fuel to generate electricity, significant amount of drop on chimneys’ dust loads, etc. In addition, since fossil fuel resources are not used in electricity generation of these systems, it is possible to gain carbon credits. 0.65 kg of CO2 credits can be achieved through the production of 1 kWh of electric.

Electricity Production from Wastes

WHR is an abbreviation of the term: Waste Heat Recovery. In high-heat demanding industries, especially cement, iron-steel and glass industries, just some part of heat generated can be utilized in the process. The remaining part is wasted via many ways mostly released through stack gases. It is possible to generate electricity via WHR systems from this wasted heat. Thus, generating electricity via free fuel provides economical benefits and important contributions to environmental sensitivity.

TAŞÇI MAKİNA has proved its pioneer and innovative position in this area too.

Turkey has a total capacity of 600MW in this field in a market of $ 1.2 billion is possible.
